Overview

The Gillian Segal Design team was honoured to participate in this invite-only design competition held and judged by Architectural Digest and Gaggeneau.

Our muse for this exhilarating creative challenge was a woman in her 40’s who was trading in a fast-paced, career-oriented city life for a quieter more relaxed life of luxury in the country.  Our goal was to create a kitchen that married luxury and relaxation - creating an oasis of traditional and edgy elements that juxtapose beautiful with the natural and relaxed design elements.

As the kitchen is the heart of the home, we opted in for an oversized island with lots of standing room for friends and family to socialize and gather and added nooks for a more comfortable, intimate dining moment. The softening of edges, and curves throughout the space provides warmth and a feeling of embrace. There is a feminine energy that curves provide. Materiality was a key design component and driver mixed with sharp juxtapositions of old and new, casual and refined, created a space that felt modern and storied all at once. Natural, and fluted stone with a traditional pairing of arches and curves while adding modern appliances and contemporary lighting created an unusual yet harmonic conversation throughout.

Gillian Segal Design was selected as a special honouree of this competition and the kitchen design has been shared and praised by industry leaders such as Athena Calderone of Eyeswoom and Jeremiah Brent.
