Overview
This beautiful heritage home located in the annex neighborhood of Toronto, Canada involved a complete remodel in collaboration with Gillian Segal Design, WORKS OFFICE of Brian O’Brian architecture, and the client.
This large-scaled renovation included reconstruction of all but three perimeter walls, top – down structural reconstruction in order to accommodate spatial movement, and a full scope of interior work including renovation, furnishing, and décor. The project in itself had a personality of its own – being a covid project there were all sorts of supply chain related issues, and hiccups. Starting construction immediately after the first design scheme was challenging, however due to the compressed time frame, it was a blessing in disguise that the work was progressing quickly which allowed us to take on this project late 2020 with completion in the summer of 2022.
Our mission for the project was to fuse the client’s charismatic personal style to the origins of the home through manipulating materials, and technique to create an unexpected pairing of rich colours, playful materials, and unexpected, yet refined architectural elements. We were sensitive to the spatial inclinations of the building, and put emphasis on the application of all materials, fixtures, and furnishing in this home; for example, the dining room used a special antiqued mirror which reflected light beautifully and immediately expanded the visual size of the space. Also, being strategic about the placement of area rugs, tile layouts, and customized tile cut and shapes to fill out and flow with curves of the space perfectly.
